افتراضي 'Big Hero' blasts past 'Interstellar' at box office

Not even Matthew McConaughey can out-charm a friendly, inflatable robot.
Big Hero 6 got off to a courageous start at the weekend box office, edging out sci-fi epic Interstellar in a tight race to No. 1. Disney's superhero adventure muscled up $56.2 million in three days, including $1.4 million earned in Thursday night preview showings, according to studio estimates from Rentrak.
Meanwhile, Interstellar narrowly missed the top spot, netting an out-of-this-world $50 million over the weekend. The film's total now stands at $52.2 million, including $3.5 million in Thursday night showings and $1.35 million from late Tuesday and Wednesday IMAX screenings.
"It's a testament to the perfectly counterprogrammed lineup, that two openers chasing two very different audiences paid off for both films, because both were able to grab their respective audiences without cannibalizing each other," says Rentrak's Paul Dergarabedian. And as the holiday season gets underway, "both of these films have

The animated Hero, based on a Marvel comic, boasts the voice talents of Scott Adsit (30 Rock), T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley) and newcomer Ryan Potter. Its robust weekend tally was likely boosted by its family-friendly PG rating and across-the-board positive reviews, earning a 94% approval rating from audiences and 91% thumbs up from critics, according to RottenTomatoes.com.
USA TODAY's Claudia Puig gave Big three stars out of four, writing that it "strikes just the right notes for a kid-friendly superhero adventure, emphasizing brains over brawn and helping people over hurting them."

Hero is the latest in a series of triumphant November outings for Disney: Frozen opened to $67 million last Thanksgiving on its way to $400 million, while Wreck-It Ralph made its debut at No. 1 with $49 million the first weekend of November 2012, earning $189 million total.

Interstellar, a $165 million space opera starring McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, opened in regular and IMAX theaters, but may have had fewer showings because of its nearly three-hour running time.
The awards hopeful was also saddled with mixed-to-positive reviews: Only 73% of critics liked it, according to Rotten Tomatoes, although it earned a more encouraging 88% approval rating from audiences. USA TODAY called the ambitious drama a "flawed masterpiece," with a story that is "ever-ambitious, sometimes riveting and thought-provoking, but also plodding and hokey."
"It's a movie that has its champions and then there are people who are not quite as enthusiastic about it. It tends be a polarizing movie," says Phil Contrino, analyst for BoxOffice.com. Interstellar earned a B+ from audiences, according to exit pollsters at CinemaScore — the same grade as Nolan's Inception in 2010, although that "had the advantage of playing during the summer when movies can hang around a lot longer," Contrino says.

t was an impressive showing for the box office overall. If estimates hold up, this will only be the fourth time that two movies have opened to more than $50 million the same weekend, according to Rentrak. Monsters University and World War Z pulled in $82 and $66 million respectively last June, preceded by Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Prometheus in June 2012, and WALL-E and Wanted in June 2008. It almost happened this summer when 22 Jump Street bowed with $57 million in mid-June, but How to Train Your Dragon 2 fell short with a close $49.4 million that weekend.
In limited release, Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything pulled in $207,000 in five theaters, averaging $41,400 per location. Although the film has earned an OK 75% positive critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 79% from audiences, the drama is still considered by many to be a heavy awards player, particularly for stars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.

Last week's champ Ouija held strong in its third week. The horror film came in at No. 4 with $6 million, bringing its total to $43 million so far. Jake Gyllenhaal-vehicle Nightcrawler landed at No. 6 in its second week with $5.5 million, while Gone Girl continued to impress with an additional $6.1 million, bounding to No. 3 and racing to $145.4 million since early October.
Dramatic comedy St. Vincent, with Bill Murray, brought in $5.7 million in its fifth week, tallying $27.4 million to date. Birdman, starring awards contender Michael Keaton, soared in expansion with an additional $2.3 million in 462 theaters, grossing $8.1 million in four weeks.
