افتراضي 'The Interview' isn't worth the worldwide frenzy

Really? This is what all the fuss is about?
Considering the controversy and chaos Sony Pictures Studios is undergoing because of it, The Interview fails to live up to the hype, floundering as a rowdy comedy as it grows duller by the minute (** out of four; rated R, opens Dec. 25 nationwide).
Maybe that's why co-star Seth Rogen has offered to smoke pot with audiences — perhaps the story seems funnier in an altered state.
Not to make light of a terrible security breach, but if The Interview is what the Guardians of Peace hackers are upset about, could their ire be due simply to the lack of laughs in a promising concept?
While it takes some toothless jabs at celebrity-obsessed media, the action comedy misses the mark, failing as a socio-political satire and as a ribald bro-mance. A humorous moment rises out of the muddled muck intermittently, but there are too few of them to make it worthwhile.
Interview's idea sounded inspired: A blowhard TV personality gets the first-ever interview with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, then gets tangled up with the CIA. But the end product turns out to be all high-concept and little humorous substance.

James Franco plays Dave Skylark, the lightweight host of silly tabloid talk show Skylark Tonight, on which celebrities such as Rob Lowe reveal they're actually bald and Matthew McConaughey is the hot ticket because a photo looks as though he's defiling a goat.
Rogen plays Skylark's producer and best friend Aaron. Once a legitimate journalist, he's mocked by former associates for sinking to inane, ratings-driven depths.
Apparently Skylark Tonight is one of Kim's favorite shows (along with The Big Bang Theory). Dave lands an interview with the reclusive leader, but before he and Aaron fly to North Korea, a CIA operative (Lizzy Caplan) tasks them with assassinating the leader.
Comedies have taken shots at North Korea before, notably 2004's Team America: World Police, which used puppets to lampoon former leader Kim Jong Il. But semi-political farce fails to strike comic gold here, largely because of Franco's bizarre, over-the top performance.
In contrast to his pitch-perfect turn as a pot dealer in 2008's Pineapple Express (which also co-starred Rogen), Franco desperately exaggerates every facial expression and his character is all over the place. Rogen fares better, with a few funny quips and deadpan reactions to Franco's lunacy.
Interview's comedic tone is uneven, lurching back and forth between broad humor and self-reflexive attempts to mitigate culturally insensitive or misogynistic moments.

Far more lame and boring than incendiary,The Interview is not very clever, funny or well-made.
