افتراضي 'Selma' brings MLK to the big screen at last

Martin Luther King Jr., has often popped up on screens big and small — his likeness has even appeared on Saturday Night Live.
But as the focus of a major studio-backed motion picture? Never.
"He's been peripheral characters," says David Oyelowo, who takes on the role of the civil rights leader in Selma (in select cities now; opens wider Jan. 9). "I've (even) acted opposite Dr. King in The Butler in one scene."
But you haven't seen MLK carry his own story, despite him being a cherished international figure of non-violent resistance, progress and equality.
Why? It's a question wrapped up in a narrative now spilling out of Hollywood, which is under the microscope as never before. Chris Rock went there while promoting his new comedy Top Five, calling Hollywood out as "a white industry." Casually racist e-mails hit the Web during the height of the Sony hacking scandal, including jokes about the kind of films President Obama likes (all black ones, cracked co-chairman of Sony Pictures Amy Pascal, who has apologized). Another e-mail revealed a producer positing that "pictures with an African-American lead don't play well overseas — even if the lead is Denzel Washington. (The actor's latest action flick, The Equalizer, made $191 million worldwide.)
Oyelowo, 38, a British-born actor of Nigerian descent who lives in Los Angeles with his wife and four children, gets frank about life outside of red carpets and movie posters.
"My experience is that what (Rock) says is undeniably true," says Oyelowo. "One of the reasons Selma took so long to get off the ground is because films that address the civil rights movement, and films that address the black experience in a big way, Hollywood has felt a need to do them through the eyes of a white character."
From Mississippi Burning to The Help (in which Oyelowo had a small role), "it's a tradition,'' he adds.
But thanks to the success of 12 Years a Slave (Oscar's reigning best-picture winner) and Lee Daniels' The Butler(which raked in $116 million domestically) — both black stories led by black actors — "I think the industry ran out of excuses not to make the film," he says.

Now, Selma is leading the awards buzz, with many critics declaring it the film King deserves. "The fact that Selma is winning such raves from critics and awards groups is all the more impressive considering 12 Years a Slave and The Butler were also released so recently," says Oscar analyst Dave Karger of movie site Fandango.com. "Clearly, this a movie that stands on its own and not just as part of a trend."

The film is up for four Golden Globe awards, including a best director for Ava DuVernay, who jumped from a $200,000 indie, 2012's Middle of Nowhere, to Selma, a $20 million studio production.
Awards site GoldDerby.com projects that Selma, which is backed by Oprah Winfrey, who appears in the film, is a lock for Oscar nominations, including nods for Oyelowo and DuVernay, who would be the first black woman to be nominated for directing.
"To me,'' says Oyelowo, "between her and Oprah Winfrey being one of the main reasons this film got made, that undeniably is a portion of Dr. King's dream."
